I decided to resign from one of the world's leading productivity specialist last year after working for 3 years with them. Many skills and knowledge I absorb during the work just to find out their method was already obsolete. The productivity improvement they implement to their clients never ever improve their client’s profitability. It hurts not only the client but me as well as their consultant.
Currently, I handle my own client since 2 January this year and apply my own method that combine lean manufacturing, quality management system ISO 9000 and IMPAC system. My daily pay rate is only Rp1,5 million or about 10% than what they must pay to the consultant firm. I got success fee rate 3% net profit which is quite fair to my client because I enjoy the money from their profit not their cost. My goal for this year is to help my client achieve at least Rp20 billion net profit and double it in the next 2 years by improving productivity and delivery on time rate. Just less than 1 month, my client able to deliver 100% on time compare with last year performance was about 50% that cost them more than Rp200 million a month due to late shipment. They are very happy with that and so with their customers, one of 500 fortune company in USA. Due to extraordinary improvement, their customer plan to tripple their business next year. The improvement is not only happen on delivery on time rate, but also can be seen on productivity, positive behaviour change, and the most important thing – their NET PROFIT. Hampir setiap klien yang pernah saya tangani sewaktu masih bekerja sebagai productivity specialist selalu heran, mengapa produktivitas yang tinggi tidak tercerminkan dalam laporan keuangan perusahaan. Lebih jauh lagi, bahkan pada perusahaan yang produktivitasnya tinggi ternyata mengalami kerugian usaha yang besar.
Pertanyaan-pertanyaan tersebut muncul akibat ketidakpahaman klien mengenai perbedaan antara produktivitas dengan profitabilitas. Secara umum, profitabilitas adalah produktivitas dalam bentuk laba usaha. Jika produktivitas didefinisikan sebagai rasio output dengan input, maka demikian pula dengan profitabilitas, hanya saja ukuran output dan input secara spesifik merupakan ukuran keuangan perusahaan, seperti rasio profit margin, return on assets, return on equity dan laba per lembar saham (ref: http://www.pps.unud.ac.id/thesis/pdf_thesis/unud-189-1361812911-bab%20ii.pdf). Karena itu, produktivitas yang tinggi tidak serta-merta menghasilkan profitabilitas yang tinggi. What is the major difference between a Productivity Specialist and a Management Consultant?6/19/2012 The fundamental difference between these 2 professional functions concerns the nature and degree of involvement during the consulting process. Both groups seek help companies improve – but in different ways and often in different areas.
The management consultant (MC) primarily deals through the medium of advice and recommendation. After the study, the MC will prepare documented conclusions regarding the problems to be solved and suggested steps to be taken. In the majority of cases the role of the MC ends of this point, as the study can be technical or operational – covering many broad and diverse subject. The productivity specialist (PS) analyzes, advises and recommends also –however, the role of the PS extends far beyond this phase. For all practical purposes the job of the PS begins where the jobs of the MC leaves off. The job of the PS is to temper his or her recommendations with the experience of the client – blending them into practical, effective solution and assist the client in implementing these solutions. The PS accept responsibility for results. Moreover, the PS is more specifically directed, concentrating on the field of operations management. An MC is therefore similar to diagnostician – studying symptons and evaluating their probable causes, defining the problem and completing his or her assignment by recommending the directions or actions to be taken. The PS on the other hand is similar to a therapist – studying and gaining a thorough understanding of the disability and laying out a program of improvement. Working directly with the patient, and staying with the patient until condition is improved, he or she completes the assignment. The major differences can be summarized as follows: 1. PS install a product; MC manualizes advice. 2. PS specializes in operations; MC’s scope of work is generally broader. 3. PS emphasizes company; MC emphasizes individual. 4. Itulah sebabnya dikatakan bahwa Checksheet adalah alat bantu yang digunakan pada saat suatu proses/kegiatan berlangsung. Macam-macam bentuk Checksheet, tetapi yang paling populer digunakan adalah bentuk ”Tally”.
Mengingat bahwa Checksheet digunakan pada saat proses berlangsung, maka hal terpenting yang harus menjadi perhatian adalah BAGAN (kerangka) formulir untuk pengisian data. Baru saja saya mendapat pemberitahuan bahwa APS (Association of Productivity Specialists) berkenan memberikan sertifikat CPS (certified productivity specialist) per tanggal 1 Maret 2012. Itu artinya saya boleh menaruh kode CPS dibelakang nama saya pada setiap dokumen dan kartu nama saya. Akan tetapi bukan itu yang paling penting. Bahwa sertifikasi ini merupakan pengakuan kompetensi saya sebagai seorang productivity specialist. Berbeda dengan management consulting, kami productivity specialist lebih merupakan implementer ketimbang konsultan.
